It was back to business for the members of the King Curling this past week after the excitement of both the Provincial and International curling events came to a close. Unbelievable athleticism, thrilling performances, invigorating and inspirational moments embodied those that witnessed, and participated, in what was truly historic for King Curling.
Enbridge Gas and King Fire & Emergency Services are working together to improve home safety and bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero. King Fire & Emergency Services received 252 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Safe Community Project Zero – a public education campaign with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC) that will provide more than 8,000 alarms to residents in 50 municipalities across Ontario.
King’s 2023 budget is poised for a tax increase, as costs for the municipality continue to rise. Aside from annual increases in things like fuel, maintenance, inflation and electricity, other pressures include meeting mandates set by the Province. Accommodating growth has also hit the Township for roughly $500,000 and all of these added pressures have led to some shortfalls this year.
The Strathcona Cup is being ranked by Bob Belcher as one “one of the best events held at the King Curling Club ever.” He also concluded that “it’s right up there with the club’s inaugural opening ceremonies in its first year and the Wheelchair Provincials that we just hosted.” This was a very significant event where curlers are only allowed to participate once so it truly is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to play in and represent your country. Approximately 1,500-1,800 Canadian curlers are participating against the 60 visiting Scottish curlers within the 3-tour group schedule.
Auto theft is the number one crime in York Region. And a small but persistent group of officers is doing their best to combat the problem. York Regional Police officers informed King councillors recently about the issue, and the measures taken to mitigate the losses.

The cost of municipal water and sewer services are going up again in King this year. Council approved the new higher rates, with a 3.41% hike in the variable rate, but no increase for the fixed component. Therefore, the blended rate will work out to 2.42% or $40.50 for the average user per year.

There’s no question the Province’s Bill 23 will have major impacts on municipalities. King has joined other municipalities in making their concerns known to the government, meeting the end-of-year deadline. The Bill, aimed at increasing the supply of housing in Ontario, may not achieve the intended outcomes, King staff point out. Rather, green lighting projects doesn’t equate to “shovels in the ground.”
