Zhou and Zhang strike silver for CDS at OFSAA Mixed Doubles Badminton

The mixed doubles team of Rayna Zhou and Zhi Wei Zhang captured OFSAA silver medals at the provincial high school badminton championships played at Trinity College School in Port Hope. Zhou and Zhang inscribed their names last week into the historical records of Country Day School by winning the Cyclone’s first-ever OFSAA medal in badminton.

CDS Cyclone track team captures 8 gold medals at CISAA Championships in Toronto

CDS Cyclone Track and Field Coach Denise Steadman was pleased with her team’s results at the CISAA Championships at York University last week. Eight of her athletes captured gold medals at the meet in Toronto, but she was even more impressed with the level of individual achievement beyond the podium: “We had so many great performances. Our focus is to get personal bests at track meets and one of our athletes – Reese Falkenberg –  dropped an incredible 7 seconds off her personal best in the 400m hurdles.”

Township reaches goals in corporate plan as 4-year strategy wraps up

The pandemic didn’t slow King Township down in making “significant progress” in year four of its Corporate Strategic Plan. Staff noted the plan, which spanned 2019-2022, set out priorities, objectives, key actions and performance measures to guide the Township’s decisions for the previous term of council.

Mayor addresses packed house at Chamber luncheon

A record attendance at the mayor’s annual business address last week revealed the strength of local business. Hosted by the King Chamber of Commerce, the luncheon featured the mayor’s “State of the Township Address,” noting all of the accomplishments and milestones in the past year. Motion to slow Marylake plans withdrawn

Plans for a long term care facility at Marylake will continue to move ahead. A motion by Councillor Debbie Schaefer to repeal recent minor variance approvals by the Committee of Adjustment, was ultimately withdrawn, after a marathon council session Monday night that went into the early morning hours. The motion, which called for a “stay” of committee approvals, providing more time for public discussion, was withdrawn, following a closed door session in which councillors were given legal advice.

Committee approves minor variances at Marylake

King’s Committee of Adjustment approved four minor variances related to a long-term care facility at Marylake. The committee meeting Wednesday evening only heard from a small number of residents (some of whom spoke the previous week). The committee members were satisfied with answers from staff, and while public opposition is still prevalent, they support staff recommendations on the variances.

Police looking into homicide after body found

The shocking discovery of a body on a walking trail north of King City has York Regional Police homicide unit investigating. Police deemed the incident a homicide and the victim has been identified as 18-year-old Zackhry Ramnath of Montreal. YRP said it looks like a “targeted incident.”

Committee defers ruling on Mary Lake variances

King’s Committee of Adjustment held off ruling on minor variances related to a long-term care facility at Mary Lake. The committee meeting Wednesday evening went late into the night. After being bombarded with more than a dozen citizen delegations and receiving 29 letters of objection, the committee decided to hold a special meeting this coming Wednesday, April 26 to reconsider the matter. The decision came after a lengthy, closed-door session in which committee members received legal advice.
