Time flies when you are having fun – especially on the water!
Adam Noyek, co-owner of Spray Lake Watersports and Activity Centre, sits back in his office chair and reflects, as he looks out over the lake. In the distance, his partners, Jono Boysen and Stephen Collins are hard at work cleaning up the mess the winter has left on their lake front property in King Township.
The office Noyek sits in, a repurposed trailer, is littered with photos and memorabilia, which they have collected from the last three summers. However, it looks as though they have been there for much longer and if you ask them, as they go into their fourth summer as a community staple: “it definitely feels like it,” he said.
This unique business has grown very quickly to become one of the major family attractions for King and York Region. Boysen explains that when they got the property in 2013, it was essentially bare. “Everything you see here was created by us. We’ve spent countless hours brainstorming, building and fixing, because we love this place.”
What makes Spray Lake so special is the atmosphere and culture these young entrepreneurs have developed.
“There is pretty much something for everyone,” said Collins. The facility’s main focus is watersports, through personalized waterski and wakeboard lessons for all ages.
“Most weekends in the summer we are booked solid. You’ll see lots of families running around. They’ll all be learning to ski or wakeboard and when they aren’t, they’ll be picnicking, playing tetherball or throwing a frisbee around. People stay here for hours on end!”
“On weekdays the action doesn’t really slow down,” Boysen explains. “We run children’s camps right through July and August. Campers are dropped off in the morning and they spend the day with us. They enjoy wakeboard lessons at our cable wakeboard park, also known as The Ranch, nature walks, land sports and more all under the direct supervision of our coaches and counsellors.”
On June 18 and 19 the facility will be hosting one event for the 6th annual ROOTS Wakeboard and Wakeskate Tour. This event is 100% grassroots focused with the goal of introducing new participants to the sport. Spray Lake is also scheduled to host the Eastern Canadian Waterski Championships on July 30 and 31. Collins explains that this will be one of the bigger events on the Canadian waterski circuit, with expected appearances from many of the nations best athletes.
Noyek confirms that this summer is shaping up to be another great one.
“I’m just hoping for as many good weather days as possible,” he said. “The summer is just too short and we are determined to serve as many families as we can.”
