Rural zoning bylaw nears completion

King’s countryside zoning bylaw, when adopted later this month, will be a strong document. Staff updated councillors on the process recently, noting it’s slated for approval June 27. The current blaw (74-53) regulates land use in the rural areas of King, which make up the majority of the municipality. This is the first comprehensive review of the 46-year-old bylaw.

King updates its tree management plan

One-third of King Township enjoys a healthy tree cover. Protecting those trees – an asset potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars – is vitally important. King staff presented a draft Tree Management Plan to councillors recently. While the plan was praised and seen as forward-looking, some residents don’t believe it goes far enough. In fact, some wanted council to reopen the discussion on a private tree bylaw, an effort that failed to draw support a few years ago.

King finances in good shape

King’s assets and cash flow are in very good shape, according to a recent audit. Councillors received a report recently on its consolidated financial statements, required under provincial mandate. King Township is asset rich, with more than $434 million of non-financial assets. Cash on hand totals $63.6 million, with another $22 million in receivables.

Exhibition marks strong ties, showcases local artist

An Austrian exhibit by a King artist aims to showcase Canada and further strengthen international relations. Ernestine Tahedl is marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between her home country of Austria and her new home of Canada. The show is being held in a gallery in Vienna and is running throughout the summer. Austrian officials were on hand to launch the exhibit and praise Tahedl for her ongoing work and accomplishments.
