Nelson Mandela once said that overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Poverty is not natural, it’s man-made and can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. And Martin Luther King Jr. asked: “What are you doing for others?"
It is possible to change the world. In fact, it’s being done, little by little, in every corner of the globe. I just returned from Mission Team 2017’s humanitarian adventure in La Higuera in the Dominican Republic. This work trip is an annual campaign led by St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in Bolton and Father Goetz in Mississauga.
This boy, and hundreds more like him, need our help.
Writers write. We tell stories. Sometimes we witness events first-hand. Often, we help others retell their tales of adventure, both tragic and happy. We get a story, or message across to others. In a way, we help readers live vicariously through others. If done well, that can be a really powerful thing.
The looks on their faces says it all. Residents of a remote area of the Dominican Republic, as well as migrant workers, praised God for the donations they received.
Local high school students were empowered as their classroom changed venue last week. In the auditorium at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in Bolton, seeds of change were planted, by renowned missionary Father Christopher Hartley.
