King resident Brent Morning held his inaugural golf tournament in support of Friends of We Care at Kettle Creek Golf Course last week, raising just over $3,000 to help send children with disabilities to camp.
“I think everyone should be proud,” he said. “Not just me but everyone that helped out. Everybody did their part and had a good time. Kate Shepherd from Motive Media helped out with the signage and Brian Stemmle (a former Olympic skier) was wonderful as emcee and I hope everyone had a good time.”
About 36 golfers attended, putting up great numbers for the first year.
Friends of We Care raises over $1 million annually in order to send 500 children to camp. Morning himself attended these camps when he was young and started the tournament to help give back.
Kevin Collins, executive director for Friends of We Care and long-time friend of Morning’s through Easter Seals, was there to participate and said events like this are critical to running their programs.
“The bottom line is that this is how we generate the funds to assist the kids to go to camp through a variety of events similar to what Brent Morning executed last week,” he said. “Basically the cost to send one of these kids to camp is about $250 a day, so we’re estimating that through Brent’s contribution, we’re going to be able to provide 16 days of camp for these kids.”
Collins said he is happy Morning has decided to jump back in to fundraising and has started another well planned event.
“It was an amazing day,” he said. “This is Brent’s attempt to get back into putting together a golf tournament, one that’s very near and dear to his heart and next year I anticipate that we’ll have more people participating and that will generate additional funds.”
Aside from the golf, there were door prizes, a live auction for a Bobby Orr picture and also some items up for grabs in a silent auction.
As for Morning, he hopes to keep the tournament going to help send a few kids to camp each year.
“Everybody seemed to have a good time and I think it’s definitely something we can build upon.”
