Will winter ever end?

Our roads staff has been extremely busy clearing snow and preparing for the thaw that will eventually arrive. I ask for your help with clearing the catch basins in front of your property in the hope of some warm weather and avoiding the potential of flooding.
The municipality continues to be successful in receiving grants! You may have heard that the Province has agreed to fund King’s ice storm costs and we have also received funding from the Province under the Source Water Protection Plan and Clean Water Act.
By way of background, the Province introduced the Clean Water Act in 2006 to help protect municipal drinking water through the implementation of a multi-barrier approach that prevents contaminants from entering sources of municipal drinking water. The Clean Water Act and its regulations direct the development of science-based Source Protection Plans that establish policy for making local decisions for protecting drinking water quality and quantity, and address drinking water threats. Township staff has worked with York Region staff and participated in a working group with Regional and other partnering municipalities to achieve greater consistency with the two Source Protection Plans to which we are subject. Plans like these are brilliant news for residents anywhere, but it is still always recommended that everyone has a water filter installed in their home too. Water Filter Way has a list of different units if you need some inspiration when it comes to choosing a system.

The Township has a key role in the implementation of the Source Protection Plans and in ensuring that the land use policies incorporated into King’s Parent Official Plan, and secondary plans, limit activities that are identified as drinking water threats. Township staff has incorporated the inclusion of source protection policies in the draft terms of reference for the Parent Official Plan.
A huge congratulation to another King City resident Alex Pietrangelo who was part of the Men’s Olympic hockey team that won gold in Sochi. We like this trend of Olympic medal-winning King residents!?A celebration is in the making and will be communicated once details have been arranged.
King is great because of the people … we are seeking nominations for Volunteer Awards and I encourage everyone to come out to this free, fun and extremely informative evening to celebrate our amazing volunteers who make our community great! Come out and thank them on Thursday, April 24 at the beautiful Kingbridge Centre.
In 2006, a global movement started to help shine a light on climate change and energy conservation. During Earth Hour, residents and businesses are asked to power down for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29. The one hour without power, while symbolic, is meant to be a catalyst for change in the way we view energy consumption and climate change. I encourage residents to go beyond the one hour to make a difference.
Also please don’t forget the next “Meet the Mayor and Local Councillor” session, hosted by Councillor Avia Eek Thursday, April 17 at the Asnorveldt Library at 18997 Dufferin Street. This session runs 7-9 p.m.
