Haven Greens developing solar facility

A King-based agricultural operation is making a significant investment in green technology.
Haven Greens is developing a 2 MW nameplate capacity ground-mounted solar facility that will generate renewable electricity for its greenhouse, helping offset a significant portion of its energy needs on-site.
“Aligned with our commitment to sustainability, it’s an important step in producing more of our own energy to support the growth of operations while reducing our environmental footprint, generating in excess of 3,700,000 kWh, and offsetting over 16,000 tonnes of CO2 annually,” said Jay Willmot, Founder & CEO.
Combined with their advanced greenhouse technology and automation, it’s another way they’re creating a more sustainable model for growing fresh, local leafy greens for Canadians year-round.
There are few global examples of this level of renewable energy integration with an indoor farm that achieve what Haven Greens is setting out to accomplish.
“What makes this project stand out is how we’ve designed it to work hand in hand with our greenhouse. Greenhouse growers in Ontario have experimented with agrivoltaic integration; however, past projects are either smaller in size and capacity, or are not designed to work in a localized micro-grid intended to directly support farm operations. Haven Greens is pushing the envelope regarding what has been achieved in the past by moving to a co-located single axis tracker based ground-mounted array to be placed alongside the Haven Greens greenhouse,” Willmot added.
The proposed facility design provides several key advantages over past agrivoltaic integrations with greenhouse operations, including:
Considerably greater behind-the-meter utilization of generated electrons.
Enhanced generative output through integration with smart tracking technology.
The ability to dump snow more effectively, thereby permitting greater electrical output in winter months.
Locating modules on the ground permits greater sunlight inside the greenhouse operation, thereby facilitating greater crop cultivation efficiency vs. previous building integrated designs.
Facilitating soil health recovery and biodiversity gains through cover cropping with pollinator plantings, offering an added productive local food source for Kinghaven Farms’ (Haven Greens’ parent company) apiary operations and also periodic grazing of other livestock.
Every kilowatt the solar facility produces will be used on-site to help power their operations, pairing renewable energy directly with year-round food production while making our greenhouse more resilient and reducing our environmental footprint.
“Renewable energy isn’t an add-on at Haven Greens. It’s part of how we’ve designed our greenhouse from the beginning, combining automation, local production, and renewable energy to rethink how leafy greens are grown in Canada,” Willmot noted.
This project helps raise the bar at Haven Greens by strengthening the resilience of their operation through lower and more predictable long-term energy pricing, reducing emissions associated with production, and supporting their goal of delivering high-quality, locally grown greens with a smaller environmental footprint.
Willmot said they hope it helps demonstrate what’s possible for the future of greenhouse agriculture in Canada.
Canadians are prioritizing domestically-grown products and have reacted extremely positively to Haven Greens since their first harvest in March of 2025.
“Beyond supporting a local business, they love our unparalleled crunch and freshness across our various pesticide-free, ready-to-eat leafy green varieties and salad kits. We’re currently the #1 indoor lettuce grower in Ontario and our retail footprint spans retailers like Costco, Whole Foods, Sobeys, Metro, No Frills, and Giant Tiger across eight provinces. We produce more than 12,000 pounds of lettuce every day and, to meet growing demand, preparation for construction of phase two of our greenhouse is currently under way, which is planned to double our facility to 10 acres of growing space under glass,” Willmot said.
