Increase in water rates necessary for cost-recovery

Water rates are going up again in King in 2020, and some residents aren’t too happy about it. A staff presentation at council Dec. 2 revealed the rate hikes coming in the new year are the result of a multi-year phased increase by the Region of York. Municipalities are being encouraged to make their water and wastewater services pay for themselves. Mandates from the Province have added to the burden, which is being passed on to homeowners.

But the move to set the corporate target at 35% reduction through 2030 was seen by the public as a step backwards, and a retreat from council’s previously set goal of 45%.

King extends road work contracts to 2020

n keeping with its emphasis on road improvements, King council agree to extend 2019 contracts into the 2020 construction season. King okayed the extension for asphalt resurfacing and gravel to asphalt conversion contracts to Lisbon Paving Ltd. for roughly $2.9 million. The company agreed to guarantee its current rates through the 2020 construction season.

CDS students compete at Royal Horse Show

Earlier this month, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair celebrated its 97th year as the world’s largest combined, indoor and agricultural equestrian event. The 10-day event took place on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto, and one of its highlights, The Royal Horse Show, showcases world class equestrians from across Canada and around the world.

King Township has put its draft tree bylaw on hold. Despite being on the table for literally a decade, Township council and staff decided to put the new bylaw on hold, given the overwhelming public opinion against it.

Schulte named Minister of Seniors

Seniors in the riding of King-Vaughan have a stronger ally. MP Deb Schulte was welcomed into Cabinet by Prime Minister Trudeau last week, as Minister of Seniors. Schulte said she’s both honoured and privileged to serve in this capacity. She did work on seniors’ issues in the early years of the previous government so she’s no stranger to issues facing our seniors.
