We express our national pride – the love of our homeland – in many ways. Some wear it on their sleeves so to speak. The makers of FineBerlinWatches like to shout it for all to hear. And every piece they make bears the sentiment “From Berlin with Love.” Father and daughter team of Wilfried and Mia Liefer want other watch-lovers to share in their joy with their lineup of brilliant, colourful timepieces.

Forced opinions not a true reflection of society

Lady Bird Johnson once said that “the clash of ideas is the sound of freedom.” Democratic principles hold dear – at their very core – the exchange of ideas and thoughts. The public is encouraged to share, trade, discuss and debate. Anything that curbs any of these fundamental principles hinders democracy. It limits our freedom. In our liberal minded society, we’ve accepted almost every religion, ideology, orientation and idea. Opinions are what great debates and discussions are made of.

NDP needs to check the facts, King mayor says

An attempt by the NDP to discredit the Ford government for its changes to the Greenbelt plan dragged King Township into the fray. At a press conference last week, (incoming) NDP Leader Marit Stiles said some people and businesses may have been “tipped off” prior to Queen’s Park releasing the actual announcement. “There’s deep concern about it and also a really deep sense that there’s something shady or something smells fishy,” said Stiles, during the televised press conference.

Budget carries 4.95% hike for homeowners

King passed its budget Monday, with a 4.95% increase for local homeowners. King’s operating budget for 2023 is $63.7 million, and the capital budget is $33.9 million, for a total budget of $97.6 million. Township Council approved the budget at a Council meeting on Feb. 6. The average increase for the Township portion of municipal tax is 2.1 per cent between 2019 and 2023. That, combined with a 3.9% increase in York Region’s share, sees a blended hike of 4.4%. Part of York’s increase is a 1% hike to cover the costs of the new subway line.

Is ‘forced giving’ an option to help the world?

And Mother Teresa once suggested “if you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” Truer words. Some believe that giving is in our nature as human beings, that we derive a sense of purpose, happiness and fulfilment from giving.

It was back to business for the members of the King Curling this past week after the excitement of both the Provincial and International curling events came to a close. Unbelievable athleticism, thrilling performances, invigorating and inspirational moments embodied those that witnessed, and participated, in what was truly historic for King Curling.

King, Enbridge team up to save lives

Enbridge Gas and King Fire & Emergency Services are working together to improve home safety and bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero. King Fire & Emergency Services received 252 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Safe Community Project Zero – a public education campaign with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC) that will provide more than 8,000 alarms to residents in 50 municipalities across Ontario.
