Resident pens book on fundraising for nature
The “Godfather of Good” is sharing his knowledge on raising money for the environment. King Township’s David Love, considered a “fundraising legend,” released his new book, Green Green, Reflections on 51 Years of Raising Money for Nature.
Canada takes top spot in best countries list
Canada has usurped its Scandinavian counterparts to claim the number one spot as the best country to live in. The 2021 Best Countries Report, compiled by U.S. News & World Report, ranked Canada as first overall. The rankings evaluate 78 countries across 26 rankings drawn from a survey of more than 17,000 global citizens, measuring 76 dimensions that have the potential to drive trade, travel and investment and directly affect national economies.
YRP taking a ‘balanced approach’
York Regional Police will be moving forward in a thoughtful, balanced way, following the expansion of police powers announced by the provincial government last week. On April 16, the provincial government announced new restrictions for Ontarians and increased police powers under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA), allowing police to stop individuals and motorists who are not at home.
OJHL season is over
It wasn’t a pleasant piece of news in a time where anything pleasant sees to be few and far between. On April 13 the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) released an email declaring their 2021 season had been cancelled. Done. Finished. Relinquished. However you want to put it there will be no official games from here on in.

Small increase for King taxpayers due to York budget
York Regional Council approved its $3.3-billion 2021 budget. The budget includes 1.54% tax increase or about $40 to the average York Region residential property bill. Acccording to King treasurer Peggy Tollett, with the Township at 0% and the Region at 1.54% (school boards unknown at this time but assuming 0%), it would result in a .77% increase overall, or $48.14 for the year with an average assessment value of $971,996 in King.
Schools move to remote learning following break
Despite a stance to keep schools open, the provincial government Monday made the decision to move elementary and secondary schools to remote learning following the April break. This action is being taken in support of the government’s broader efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19. Data will be assessed on an ongoing basis and health officials will be consulted to determine when it will be safe to resume in-person learning.

PS752 investigator seeks war crimes prosecution against Iran
As experts from around the world pore through Iran’s final report on the downing of Ukrainian Flight 752, evidence is mounting about the fatal errors and omissions made in this criminal act. Canadian officials and victims’ family members are casting doubt on Iran's investigation into the destruction of Ukrainian Airlines Flight PS752 after it concluded the aircraft was shot down due to human error. Safety investigators from Iran’s civil aviation authority concluded the Boeing 737-800 passenger plane was shot down accidentally in January 2020 after being “misidentified” by an air defence unit as a “hostile target.”
