It’s a lofty goal, but the Juvenile Schomberg Red Wings look primed to retain their belt as Ontario champions.
Having finished the regular season in third place (15-4-1) in the Eastern Ontario Minor Hockey League, the Wings drew the Newcastle Stars in the first round of the post-season, a team on the other end of the spectrum, having finished the season with four straight losses.
And Schomberg has just kept them coming.
The series opened last Friday at the Trisan Centre, with Cameron McKnight providing the first goal mid-way through the first period on a shot from the point. From there the floodgates opened, taking Game 1 by a final score of 5-0, and an early lead in the six-game series.
Offensively, the Wings didn’t slow down for Sunday’s road game, taking a commanding lead in the series with a 6-3 win in Newcastle.
Last year, it took the Wings six games in the OMHA championship series to come out on top of the Beverly Bandits as the province’s “CC” division winners.
While obviously among the favourites to repeat, they are hoping not to make the same mistakes that cost them a back-to-back title of a different sort just two weeks ago.
The reigning champions of the 2015 International Silver Stick tournament in Mooretown, it seemed like a case of deja-vu in this year’s incarnation in early January.
They breezed through both the Wainfleet Wild and Central Perth Drive in round robin action, steadied only by a 3-3 tie with the South Bruce Blades to finish the round undefeated.
A 4-0 shutout of the Lambton Shore Predators in the semi-final set up a championship date rematch with the Blades.
A hard-fought contest proved to be a goalie battle, with the Blades taking the title from the Wings in a 2-0 shutout.
You can catch the Wings back in action this Saturday against the Stars at Trisan Centre. Puck drop is set for 4:50 p.m.
