The King City Secondary School Lions sent last year’s YRAA Tier 2 champs packing with authority on Friday, in a Tier 2 semi-final match up that was over from the start.
Lions quarterback Michael Bazzo led his team to victory by tossing for three touchdowns, aided by two rushing majors from Adamo Sciarra in a 45-0 win over the St. Joan of Arc Thunder.
The Lions will face the Brother Andre Cardinals in the Tier 2 finals, who also trounced their opponents in the semis, defeating Markham by a score of 45-8. King City’s defence will be facing quite a challenge on Saturday, competing against an offense that averaged just over 30 points a game in the regular season.
The Cardinals finished second in their division behind only the Huron Heights Warriors, whose dominating performance all season has led them to the top of Tier 1.
King City will be the host, with kick-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
As fate would have it, King City was within a few yards of reaching the Tier 1 semi-finals in the final week of regular season action.
They seemed to be in control against the St. Max Kolbe Mustangs with less than a minute to go, down by just one point and deep in Mustang territory. A fumble inside the ten-yard line put an end to their comeback and sent them to the Tier 2 playoffs.
St. Max Kolbe defeated the Newmarket Raiders 22-16, also on Friday, to meet the Huron Warriors in the Tier 1 final.
