Five-figures raised for charity at Hickstead Park grand opening

Mayor Steve Pellegrini as well as councillors David Boyd and Bill Cober unveiled the new Hickstead Park and Splash Pad in Schomberg on Saturday, along with the family and friends of Abby Eveson, a two-year-old born with congenital heart defects.

Schomberg’s Hickstead Park, named after Canada’s most successful show jumping horse, held its grand opening on Saturday to a large crowd of families and supporters.
Many were there in support of the “We Believe in Abby” campaign, an ongoing initiative for the Eveson family in Schomberg to help their two-year-old daughter Abby, who has suffered congenital heart defects since birth.
Sporting pink shirts reading #webelieveinabby, volunteers blew up balloons, face-painted, and held a silent auction to raise funds for Sick Kids.
The results were overwhelming – more than $8,700 was raised for the program, along with $1,300 for Cardiac Kids from a charity barbecue held the same day.
“None of this could have been possible without the amazing support from so many generous people and organizations,” said Abby’s mother Becky. “We have had so much positive feedback from people that attended and I really hope it is something we can do an annual basis.”
The completed park now boasts a large jungle gym structure, a gazebo, and most notably a splash pad, which already got its share of use on opening day.
