Battle of the brooms in King Curling Club

By Shellee Morning

Wednesday night curling has always been exciting for the social leaguers and this season they have been living up to their high standards of fun and smooth camaraderie in the opening rounds of their schedule.
Team Heise of Division 2 has set the bar and the criteria for what it takes to become league leaders.  Undefeated after 3, the foursome led by Skip Stephen Heise, easily snagged another win last week over Team Brodhurst.  Heise’s father; Erich seems to have found his comfort zone playing in vice position for his son, and the pair have successfully taken control of the rings each week against their opponents.  Doug and Teresa Shorthill complete the team as the front end, and have also played their rocks with great consistency.
Tied for second spot and clearly in the chase, are teams Chris Welch and Peter Wasylkiw. Both Welch and Wasylkiw won their decisions during last week’s round and are ready to face this week’s competition for their Battle of the Brooms.
Other winners include Swackhammer, Lee, Rhind, Gerrits and Robinson.  With only one month in of a schedule with at least seven more weeks before the Christmas break,   this league is more than capable of a revolving front-runner as the excitement builds towards playoffs in search of Wednesday League Champions.

‘Hitting the broom’

Accuracy of hitting the broom with the exact weight has been a key factor for all King curlers this season so far, and with some pretty keen ice; thanks to Kyle Duck and his many aides, precision shot making has resulted for several (happy) members.
In the Men’s League, Teams Davis and LaPlante are broom for broom in Division One and Teams Boynton and Smith lead the pack in Division Two.  A host of teams trailing a point behind in both groups are facing their own Battle of the Brooms as well in their quest for Men’s League Division leader.
The Divas of the club have also appeared in top form this season so far in their hot pursuit of Tuesday Night Ladies League title-holders.  Clinching the top two spots after last week’s matchups are Teams Frans and Russo.
These two highly competitive ladies have guided their teams to an undefeated record that can only indicate just what kind of interest and excitement is in store when they meet to go stone for stone against each other.
While the Mixed Team Entry leagues sweep through their matchups with take-outs and hit and roll towards leadership, the Social Leagues continue to “Draw” momentum with a pleasurable ease of fun and enjoyment.
This week, many teams will be wearing costumes in the celebration of Halloween and we fully expect some rather unique outfits to grace the sheets of King. The King Curling Club directors and members would like to remind everyone to watch out for the witches with brooms and wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween.
