Doors Open in King Township on Saturday, Sept. 17 was a great success, and already there is talk about the 2017 event!
Its success is very much to the credit of the generosity of the property owners who opened their doors and to the many volunteers who greeted visitors throughout the day at each site. The effort was well worth it as we had as many as 300 people visiting sites to learn about the heritage and culture of King Township. The greeters heard local visitors saying “I have had dinner here but this is different; now I can really look at the building and learn its story” or, “I drive by here often but have never stopped to look.”
About 50% of the visitors were not locals, including many from Toronto and the rest of the GTA who said they knew of King but had no idea what was here.
The Heritage Advisory Committee appreciates very much the tremendous support from the community, the Township and our local papers for their support in different ways: opening up their properties; graciously greeting the visitors, often with refreshments; and, advertising and promoting the event.
The committee also wants to acknowledge the leadership of one our members, Kelly Matthews. Because of her efforts we can be proud of Doors Open 2016 in our township.
