The Bantam AE Schomberg Red Wings have almost doubled their season’s win total in the past month thanks to a high scoring four-game win streak.
Following a pair of wins over Ajax and East Gwillimbury 7-4 and 4-2 respectively, the Red Wings first real test of the new year came last Saturday hosting the Barrie Colts at the Trisan Centre.
Barrie is a powerhouse in the York Simcoe Minor Hockey League, leading the league in points with a 20-3-4 record heading into the game.
However, the Red Wings were able to take advantage of a number of special teams opportunities, first earning a 5-on-3 power play early in the game.
A blast from the top of the left circle beat the Colts goaltender blocker side, putting the home team up 1-0.
The goaltending at the other end of the rink was on fire, as the Schomberg keeper made a number of key saves highlighted by two breakaway glove saves only a few minutes apart in the second period.
Barrie continued their penalty troubles throughout the match up, at one point giving the Red Wings a four-minute, two-man advantage at the end of the second period.
Schomberg’s third 5-on-3 started the third, where they capitalized again just 20 seconds into the frame to double the lead.
They scored two more before the final buzzer, while the defence shut down the Colts in a 4-0 victory.
Hosting the Whitby Wildcats at home the next day, it was a case of déjà vu as the Wings earned another 4-0 win for their fourth win in a row.
The streak brings their win column up to nine in league standings.
The Red Wings complete the season against the Richmond Hill Stars on the road on Saturday.
