Riding high off a 7-2 domination of St. Andrew’s College to begin the new year and a tie with Villanova before the holiday break, the U16 Country Day School Cyclones entered Monday’s match up with De La Salle not having lost in over a month.
Things seemed to begin right where they left off at King City Arena, as the Cyclones took a 1-0 lead mid-way through the first period on a wrister under the goaltender’s glove.
De La Salle battled back only two minutes later, as the De La Salle forward made a nice solo effort to shake off two defenders and find the five-hole to tie the match.
They added one more with under a minute left in the period on a rebound off of the post.
After allowing a third unanswered goal to fall behind 3-1 in the second, CDS looked for a comeback when the opposing goalie missed a poke-check in front of the net to allow for an easy deke to the backhand and a goal into the empty cage.
But their luck would change on a De La Salle 2-on-1 shortly after, as the puck carrier elected to shoot, beating the CDS goaltender five-hole to restore the two-goal lead.
Two more goals before the end of the second had the home team in a 5-2 hole heading to the third.
It was more of the same in the final frame, as De La Salle found the back of the net twice more.
Their one blunder came with just over five minutes left to play, as the goaltender mis-timed a poke-check on a dump-in to send the puck over his back and into the net.
The final buzzer brought about a 7-3 win for De La Salle.
The loss brings the Cyclones’ record to 2-3-1 on the season.
Following a rematch at De La Salle earlier this week, the Cyclones hit the ice on Wednesday in Cobourg to take on Trinity College School.
Both C.D.S. and Trinity College are in the thick of the CISAA standings with five points and four points respectively.
