The Let’s Rock ‘n Roll MS Away committee held its first Classic Car Show in Schomberg this past June.
And last Saturday, Let’s Rock ‘n Roll MS Away board member Merilena Carinci, her family, and a number of other board members were able to present a $9,000 cheque to the MS Society Yorkcheque MS South Chapter.
“It was a beautiful day,” said Carinci. “We were very pleased with the turnout for our first fundraiser.”
“It should really be able to help those with MS subsidize what they need, whether it be homecare, or wheelchairs … things they can’t afford.”
As well $5,000 was donated to the MS clinic at Sunnybrook Hospital to go towards research for the disease.
“As chair of this committee, and as someone who suffers with MS, I know first-hand how important it is to raise awareness of this awful disease that strikes both men and women in the primes of their lives,” said Let’s Rock ‘n Roll event chair Monia Isgro. “This event is also an opportunity to raise much-needed funds for continued research, which might someday find a cure.”
The presentation was made at the York South Chapter’s annual barbeque at the Heritage Centre in Richmond Hill.
Marinci said the fundraiser will now be a yearly event, held on Father’s Day at the Schomberg Fairgrounds.
“Considering the success of the event in raising money, we definitely want to make it an ongoing thing.”
MS is a debilitating disease, affecting the body’s central nervous system. An estimated 100,000 Canadians are living with Multiple Sclerosis.
