Cynthia Tauro, a Schomberg resident and graduate from King City Secondary School, is quickly emerging as an inspiring local talent within the community. The young jazz pianist and vocalist is completing a degree in Jazz Performance at Carleton University in Ottawa after she was awarded an admission scholarship for her many musical talents.
Cynthia began playing the piano at the age of three, following in the footsteps of her musically inclined family members and becoming the third generation of trained musicians in her family line.
“I come from a family of musicians … both my uncle and my mom play jazz piano and they encouraged me to give it a try myself,” Cynthia said.
“Jazz music is so much fun … it involves a lot of improvising and it’s kind of more free in a way, with a lot of room to establish your own style within in.”
Tauro has been trained as a classical and jazz pianist and has preformed at local community events, radio shows, open mic nights, and accompanied other artists in school performances. She hopes continue performing to strengthen her skills and eventually being composing pieces of her own in the future.
“This year has been a really big year for me. I was always debating whether I really want to go into music, and this year at school I was playing with a lot of really good musicians and they kind of helped me figure out that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
This summer, her goal is to expand her craft as much as possible by playing venues within and outside her community in order to bring her training and experience together to establish her craft. Her next performance will be hosted on Tuesday, July 22, at the Jazz Bistro Lounge in Toronto from 6-8 p.m. where she will be featured for their Young Artist Series, running this summer.
Tauro will also be performing alongside her mother Michele Mele at the Jazz Bistro on Tuesday, Aug. 12, where she will accompany her on the piano as they perform original compositions from Michele’s album “Dream.”
