Player of the Week Ryder Irwin

By Simon Lloyd

Peewee
Cobras 10, Aurora 9

The King Cobras, sponsored by Sports International took on the Aurora Jays Harris Plumbing team in their season opener last week.
The Cobras got off to a quick start thanks to a lead-off walk and a stolen base by Aaron Fraser. He set the stage for Matthew Murphy, who earned the first RBI of the season.
The Cobras kept the pressure on before Patrick Buffa launched a huge triple to centre field, earning the team five runs in the first inning. Aaron Fraser came out and pitched a solid bottom of the first and with some great defence, including an acrobatic catch of a line-drive by first baseman Buffa, the Cobras held on to their lead.
Strong offence continued throughout the night, bolstered by excellent pitching from Owen Witten, who pitched two solid innings, including four strikeouts and made some tough defensive plays.
This was a game of firsts that included almost every play possible, from a double play, successful run-down at third to strike outs and extra base hits, as well as the first win of the season for the Cobras who held on to win the game 10-9.
It is sure to be an exciting season for this team.

King 22, Aurora 11

After months of cold weather and rain delays, the season finally got underway in King City for the Wyndsong Farm Peewee Cobras. Facing their first Aurora opponent, Dynamic Funds, the Wyndsong Cobras took to the mound with authority to start the game. Jackson Cunneyworth struck out 2 and had a little help from Max and Jonah Orlandi with a heads-up play to catch a runner stealing third in the top of the first.
The bottom of the first set the rhythm of the game with bats working hard to mercy the first two innings. The Aurora opponents tested the Cobra pitchers in the second inning, but were doubled up by Max Orlandi at third base with a swift pop fly catch.
With the score 10-9 going into the bottom of the third inning, Cunneyworth brought his offence as well as his pitching and impressed the crowd with a solo home run to cap the Cobras inning run total at 3, giving them a 13-9 lead.
Solid pitching by Devin Wells and a phenomenal team effort at the plate gave the Cobras a 22-11 win after 4 innings for their season opener.
The player of the game was Jackson Cunneworth for his contribution both on the mound and at the plate. The Wyndsong Farm Cobras tip their hats to their sponsor and want to thank all the coaches and volunteers for their support.

KTBA Player of the Week

Ryder Irwin is the tallest player on King Team #2 (Prism Painting) by at least a foot. In the Sr. Rookie team’s inaugural game of the season at King Upper May 26, Ryder helped his team to a 7-6 victory over King Team #3 (In This Corner Bar & Grill).  Ryder struggled last year at the plate because of his height and his powerful speedy swing, but this year since his first at-bat Ryder has exploded his contact swing and also made great plays at first base.
Thanks in part to Ryder’s great hits and stellar fielding, King Team #2 edged the win over the King Team #3 last Monday night and earned him the KTBA Player of the Week honours.
