Species still in danger

April 22, 2014   ·   0 Comments

I read with great interest the article “Barn swallows being protected in King Township.”
Today, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) would not have built or monitor nest kiosks. The reason being is the Highway 9 bridge was approved for reconstruction before July 2013.
In July of 2013 the cabinet of the current Liberal government exempted the following industries for five years from being governed by the Endangered Species Act: road-building, waste management, quarries, subdivision building, forestry, mining, hydro power and agriculture.
This will mean that these industries will not need to do a full environmental assessment for any projects and therefore can destroy the habitat of 212 endangered species register under the act such as, the Redheaded woodpecker, Blanding turtle, and Woodland Caribou.
The result could be species cleansing of certain species from the Ontario environment.
