The final week of play in the King Curling Club’s 2013-14 season resulted in some very impressive playoff curling.
New and defending champions were crowned after the playoff series for the Mixed Team Entry League as well as the club’s social leagues.
Wednesday mixed social began the capping of winners with a few of the clubs veteran curlers going broom for broom against each other.
Peter Wasylkiw, along with Donna Logue and Doug and Teresa Shorthill, played against Veteran lady Skip Kaye Groen and her team of Ian Donaldson, and Karen and Matthew Turrif. Both played with high energy and sharp strategy throughout the game, but it would be Team Wasylkiw taking the edge and claiming the title for consolation winners of early draw.
The championship late draw game included veteran curler Skip Wilf Robinson and his team of Mario Parete, Lois Groombridge and Edith Mussato against Skip Fraser MacDonald, Diane Bracken, Mike “Blister” O’Hara and Neil Harris.  MacDonald led the game after 4 ends, but allowed Team Robinson to score 3 and tie it up in the 5th.  Collecting another in the 6th for the go-ahead point Robinson clearly had the opposition scrambling.  MacDonald found 2 in the 7th heading into the 8th without hammer.
Nervously watching from behind the hack Team MacDonald could only wait as the veteran Robinson threw his final shot of the year. The close game ended with Team MacDonald declared the champions with a winning score of 8-6.
Skip Fraser MacDonald has a lot to be thankful for as he needed to spares that night to which Karen and Matt Turiff happily agreed to step into. Both participated in the early draw on the runners-up winning team and apparently brought their winning form for MacDonald to also find victory with.

Mixed Team Entry

In the beginning there were 18 teams in the Mixed Team Entry League that started the ultimate playoff push. But the final 2 playing for the championship title were defending champions Team Gorsline against Team Steenhoek.
Team Gorsline, who last year won after a marathon game that took 3 hours to complete, were hoping that this year’s match would end in regular game time play.
The featured match took centre ice with spectators giving play by play commentary. Skip Bruce Gorsline and his team of Kathleen Gorsline, Greg Switzer and Heather Routledge took control in the opening end putting the opposition in the chase. Skip Dan Steenhoek and his team of Teresa Steenhoek, as well as Peter and Rosie Kamstra played hard and with determination throughout the game, but it would be Team Gorsline who claimed victory for their 2nd consecutive championship title.

Friday Fun League

Friday Social League also wrapped up its season crowning their winners in both the consolation and championship division games.
The consolation title went to Ian Donaldson and his teammates John Zainia, Sheila Mckenzie and Claire Murphy.
The championship game involved Team Morning against Kyle Barber to what was anticipated to be a close match between the two.
A solid hit and roll buried behind cover lifted Morning to a 2-0 lead after two. The scoreboard was in favour of Barber for the next 3 ends, but after 6 the score was settled at a tie.  Skip Shellee Morning and her team of Charles Levine, and Rick and Wendy Yates were able to find 2 in the 7th making it a 6-4 lead coming home.  Skip Kyle Barber and his squad of Rob Robertson, Miriam Firth and John Wilmot, played with control, and threw accurate weight for a solid team effort.
Lead John Wilmot, played a personal best by placing his guards in perfect position each end setting things up for his team.  Barber executed some game-saving double take-outs also had a great game.
In the 8th and final end, Morning had stones counting in first and 3rd position while Barber had one at the back of the button.  Morning’s last rock was a guard that over curled, leaving an open hit for Barber. Barber threw with nuclear weight wicking off of one but sailed through the back of the house.  Team Morning captured the win and the title commenting afterwards that “this was one of the best well-matched games played this season.  It was a close game with great shots made by both teams and it’s a great way to end the season.”

LaPlante Lauded

King Curling Club would like to congratulate club member Jody LaPlante on his recent retirement and wish him all the best in his “future of freedom.”
After a full year of exciting curling and where greater achievements reached new levels, the rocks of granite will be now laid to rest for a well-deserved break. After the many hits, angle raises and run-backs, that have been in the daily games by the curlers of King, are now only but an echo as we embrace and welcome the warmer weather upon us.
What’s the best part about the break? It’s only 6 months until we come back!  Keep Calm and Curl On.
