When Nobleton Tim Hortons owners Len and Rita Mizzoni were trying to decide which charity would benefit from this summer’s smile cookie campaign, they said it was important that it go to a local charity that helps local families.
Enter Mary Buchanan, organizer and founder of the Nobleton Christmas Drive. For years Buchanan has raised money to help families in Nobleton buy Christmas gifts and other practical goods during the holiday season.
Buchanan was given a Toys R’ Us gift card worth $1,680 from Tim Hortons in Nobleton.
Len Mizzoni said the charity fit exactly what they were looking for when it came to deciding who to give to.
“It’s a great cause and Tim Hortons is always about doing things for the community,” Mizzoni said. “It’s local and it’s a great charity and hopefully this total will grow next year. That’s the goal.”
People submit their “wish list” to the Christmas Drive and then Buchanan does her best to make it happen.
She said usually people are looking for children’s winter wear, a few Christmas presents, turkey dinners and sometimes even Christmas trees.
Buchanan said she was thrilled when she heard about the Tim Hortons donation.
“That will go pretty far for us,” she said. “It’s great.”
According to Buchanan, the Nobleton Christmas Drive serves 10 to 25 people or families each year.
