Curlers use ‘hocus pocus’ for spine-chilling results

While the skies darkened, so did the chilling sheets of the King Curling Club as members crept their way towards another frightful evening throwing stones and broom (sticks) working their magic. The Grimm Reaper graced his presence throughout the early draw on Thursday’s Mixed Team Entry league as did a few other extremely unique costumed players.
Don Cherry, a Russian immigrant, indian chief(ette) and cowgirl, and of course no ghostly night would be complete without the cackle of a curling witch. The spine-chilling atmosphere clearly had a few teams all shook up as their scores were carved deeper into the hole of blackness.
All four sheets on this early hour of doom played heavily into the caldrons as the scoreboard resulted in lopsided victories for teams Groombridge, Howard, Phillips and Ellison as they dominated with their spooktacular take-outs all claiming victory against their victims.
As the witching hour continued, wolves howled and the moon remained hidden behind creeping clouds.  The wind whistled through the gusts of cold rain and the late draw members began to make their way through the haunted curling house.  The air was filled with a spirit of excitement and at the same time a call for courage and bravery to those that needed to take advantage of their opponent.
The four Amigos (aka Larry and Sue Sheardown, Cindy Phillips, and Charlie Pringle of Team Sheardown) met with Team Barber in hopes of using some of their finely tuned hocus pocus magic during their first of the season match up. But the wizardry of skip Dave Barber and his crafty team of Sandra MacDonald, Karl Davis and Anne Jessop were too much to handle for the amazing Amigos. A tight game full of scares and surprises, Team Barber squeaked through the final end by a score of 6-5.
The Biker Gang of Team LaPlante roared through the first 2 ends of their match against Team Sidon with a score of 5-0 after 2. The commanding lead allowed LaPlante and his gang a moment of coolness that only bikers in leather can do.
Team Sidon who switched player positions placing Michael Johns as Skip, Diana Russo 3rd, Mike Sidon 2nd, and Petra Sidon as Lead, also had a bit of witchcraft up their sleeves and slowly chipped away at the score board a point at a time.
Biker Chicks Shellee Morning and Karon Dalby along with Biker Dude John Frans narrowly kept their tough image above water allowing the opposition to come within one by the final end. Skip Jody LaPlante and leader of the gang, managed to hold onto a tie after a hair-raising 8th end. The tie maintains the first place spot for LaPlante, but slashes their lead with Team Barber by one.

Special Moments

Wednesday night curlers were missing a few of their regular members last week with the timely arrival of possibly the club’s newest future member.  King Curling member Fraser MacDonald and his wife Julie welcomed their first child – baby Hannah.  Jim and Pat Earl were also missing their game to welcome baby Hannah as they excitedly became first-time grandparents.  Congratulations to the MacDonalds and the Earls on your new bundle of joy.
King Curling Club would also like to welcome Al Courneya back to the rings after successful hip surgery last summer.  Hurry hard and keep the broom sweepin’ Al!
