“The best part about Curling is the opportunity to play.”
Members of the King Curling Club have once again resumed to the sheets with brooms in hand and their enthusiastic curling spirits were ready to go.
All 12 leagues got underway for the club’s 3rd season this past week, and as usual, members arrived at the rink to re-acquaint with old friends and meet some new. The laughter and good cheer was electrifying as it began in the curlers lounge and carried through down at ice level as new teams were announced in the social leagues, and some exciting new changes for the Team Entry leagues.
Monday night men’s team entry posted some super exciting games between both divisions.  Winners in the A division were teams Davis, Gerrits, LaPlante, MacDonald and Sidon.  Teams Smith, Livingstone, Krauter, Howard and Boynton all found the winning rings in the B division.
Tuesday night ladies league is supporting a full draw this season and had a very productive opening night with a “tune-up” game to replace the summer golf swing and get back into a curler’s throw and sweepers mode.
King’s social leagues were all well accepted with an exhilarating and motivational energy that flowed across the rinks as the new teams shook hands and began their season openers. With new challenges and personal goals under way the sweepers and callers resumed their positions as though they had never left.
The King Curling youth program invites returning leagues; bantam, junior and “Little Rocks” once again and the leagues program directors anticipate a very exciting year for all.

Curling in July

King Curling was well represented this past July at the 8th annual Tropicurl Bonspiel held in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
Peter and Rosie Kamstra, along with Dan and Teresa Steenhoek participated in the “Pieces of Eight” 5-game spiel that hosted 48 teams from across the United States and Canada. There was a strong attendance from Canada including a team all the way from Newfoundland, and all were made very welcome and treated very well in the 5 sheet- 4 division tournament. The scheduled games began at 7 a.m. and swept hard through to 11 p.m. with the Steenhoek/Kamstra squad winning 3 out of 5 games.   The King team made it into the semi-final championship game against a team from Arthur, Ontario. The game was a close match with one end described by Kamstra “as a potentially game changing end,” saw the foursome in a back and forth match.  Team Arthur made a solid end in the final moments of the game to capture the semi-final win and eventually becoming overall Champs.
King Curling Club congratulates Team Steenhoek/Kamstra on a superb performance in Pittsburgh. The club’s board of directors wishes all of its members a fun and exciting year of curling for the 2013-14 season.  If anyone is still interested in joining you may contact Steve Bradley, director of membership at registration@kingcurling.com or visit our website www.kingcurling.com.
