Known as “LIL M,” Nobleton’s Michael Furlano is most likely the only 10-year-old rapper you’ve heard of lately.
The young artist is currently performing live shows, recording, writing his own music and has even started garnering attention and accolades at talent competitions.
“For just about a year I have been getting out there and working on my career and working on music and getting my name out there performing and now I’m actually taking it seriously and writing my own lyrics too,” he said.
Rapping since he was five, the budding artist said he has always liked rap music and one day simply decided to try to it for himself.
“I’ve always been listening to rapping and singing – I’ve always loved music,” he explained. “My inspiration for rapping is from Eminem. I’ve always been a huge fan and so one day I actually tried rapping and thought I was really good at it and I really had lots of fun with it.”
Michael also said he has a lot of respect for Canadian rappers, including Toronto’s Drake and Nova Scotia’s Classified.
“I like Classified a lot. He’s an inspiration of mine because he’s really good and he’s a Canadian artist. I like Drake too, because he’s also Canadian.”
Most recently, LIL M was the third place winner at Hidden Talent Toronto, a competition that gives up-and-coming artists a chance to perform on stage and win a recording package.
He has also performed in front of big crowds, something he said he loved and doesn’t faze him at all.
“I perform and go in singing competitions all the time,” he said. “It’s natural for me. It doesn’t scare me at all.”
His sister Ellissa Furlano, said she’s not surprised that Michael has really taken to music.
“He has always been singing and rapping since he was a little kid and then once he got older, we realized that he’s got talent and it’s going places now.”
She also said Michael’s career is moving quickly since he really started to put his mind to things.
“It’s evolving pretty fast, because he’s been doing this for a year and he’s already performed live and been on the news a bunch of times. Now he’s working on getting an agent,” she said. “He’s moving pretty quick.”
And he doesn’t just rap. Michael also sings, plays guitar and has an interest in getting into acting.
When it comes to his writing, he said he keeps it simple.
“I write about life, everyday life, what’s going on, what’s on my mind and being a kid,” he said, adding that having support from his family has made music fun.
“My family loves and supports me and lots of our friends and family come to my shows. So I have lots of fans, but also lots of random people come to my shows, too,” he said. “It feels awesome. It feels like I’m getting out there and my career is taking off. It’s really fun.”
Coming up, Michael will be attending CMTC (Canadian Model and Talent Convention) and will be performing at the CNE in his year’s Rising Stars competition.
