Bob Rae, MP and former interim leader, addressed party faithful at the Holland Marsh Eek Farms.
Rae said it’s important to provide a future for Canada’s farmers and as the Liberals build their platform, they will talk about the importance of agriculture in the Canadian economy.
It’s a period of renewal for the party, after getting “whacked” in the last federal election. Currently, the party has no debt and they’re gathering momentum all the time.
Regarding the leadership, Rae said he decided to finish his role as interim leader and let the numerous candidates compete for the title. He was happy to see such a large number of candidate and delegates, indicating growing enthusiasm.
Justin Trudeau, he said, has “politics in his bones and blood.” He knows what has to be done; he likes people; is resilient, bright and “enormously talented.”
“I’m convinced we have the best leader,” and the party needs the best team to win the next election.
As soon as the electoral boundaries are altered, the party will begin to organize their nomination meetings. They have to work on their platform and generate practical ideas and proposals, he said. They need a policy to address the sustainability of the economy and share the prosperity.
“When the ship of prosperity takes off, we have to make sure we’re all on that boat,” he said.
“I want Canada to be a leader and I think we can be that leader,” he said.
Another challenge is the cost of medications for Canadians and it’s important to build a new network of health care.
“With open hearts and minds we can change the world,” he stressed.
Adam English, president of the York-Simcoe Federal Liberal Association, thanked the hosts, Avia and Bill Eek.
He said it’s an exciting time to be a Liberal, noting the party is at a crossroads. “I think we’re taking the right one (path),” he said.
The party faithful have to take the next step by gathering and joining forces in preparation for the next election. The Victory Fund allows supporters to prepare and build for the next battle.
