The fall CISAA (Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association) season is coming to a close, and with it comes some hardware for student athletes at Villanova College in King City.
The medals started rolling in for the Knights on Halloween day, as Villanova hosted the final four in the Varsity Men’s Soccer DII Division. The team finished tied atop the West Division standings, dropping only one game early in the season.
After disposing of St. Andrew’s College in the semifinal 5-0, the boys met the defending champion Lakefield College School in the championship. Lakefield was undefeated in the regular season.
The Knights came out on top 3-1, claiming CISAA gold.
The following day the Junior Varsity Women’s Field Hockey team made their way to Trinity College School in Port Hope to battle for the DI title.
Squeaking out a 1-0 victory over Holy Trinity in the semifinal, the girls faced a tough challenge with the home team for the championship. Trinity College handed the Lady Knights their only two losses of the regular season.
But that didn’t seem to intimidate the team, shutting out Trinity in a 3-0 upset to capture Villanova’s second CISAA championship in as many days.
One of the most impressive and dominant programs in the CISAA this season, the varsity women’s basketball team, entered the playoffs last Wednesday as the dominant force in the DI Division.
Eager to make an impression on home court, the team was looking to make history as the school’s first basketball champions.
After a perfect 7-0 season, the Lady Knights first met with the 4-3 Ridley College Tigers in the semifinals.
Despite a close score at the half, Villanova pulled away in the second to a dominating 40-21 win.
A tougher challenge came in the form of Appleby College in the championship game, which had barely knocked off the defending champion Trinity College by one point in their own semifinal.
The game was the Lady Knights for the taking right from the get-go, going to the half up by nine points. They rode that lead right to the final whistle, becoming CISAA DI Division Champions by a final score of 41-34.
With the win, the team earns a berth in the OFSAA DI Championships next weekend in Cornwall.
The Knights also added two silver medals to the trophy case, as the U13 Men’s Soccer and the Senior Women’s Field Hockey teams each finished in second place in their respective divisions. Both teams finished at the top of their conference in the regular season.
The U14 Women’s Basketball team also earned a spot in the CISAA final four.
Men’s basketball is right around the corner, as the senior team takes on Greenwood College School later this month.
Varsity hockey season is set to kick off later this month, with both the Senior and Junior Men’s teams opening their season on Dec. 1. The Senior Women’s season is set to start on Dec. 8.
