Summer can’t arrive soon enough and fortunately, there’s an oasis right here in King Township to get outside, stay active and have fun.
Spray Lake Watersports was launched in the summer of 2013 by a group of friends with the vision of providing a unique watersport experience to customers, without having to travel to “cottage-country.”
Combined, the young group of founders has an unprecedented amount of experience in the watersport, tourism and outdoor activity industries and they are determined to build on last summer’s early successes and turn Spray Lake into a community staple in King.
The setting itself is quite spectacular. A freshwater lake, it’s located on Keele Street near Asnorveldt, in the Holland Marsh. Core activities for customers include waterskiing and wakeboarding behind brand new ski boats and wakeboarding on what they consider, the best cable park in the province (nicknamed “The Ranch”). Other activities include, beach volleyball, swimming and canoeing. If you enjoy these kinds of activities, why not try Kite Surfing? They also offer kids camps, corporate events, school groups and birthday parties!
“We are very excited to open our gate in 2014,” said Adam Noyek, one of the centre’s founders.
They’ll spring into action as soon as the snow melts preparing for the season.?Noyek expects the season to open on the May long weekend (May 16).
“What makes us different, aside from the convenient location, is our terrific staff,” Noyek added. “They really are passionate about what they do, and their ability to work with first-timers to professionals; from young children to adults is just unmatched anywhere else. We also put a huge focus on safety and procedures. Something we are trying to set an example with for other facilities across the country.”
This summer two major community watersports events are to be hosted at Spray Lake, both of which are open to the public. The Root Wakeboard and Wakeskate Tour will be hosted on June 21-22 and the Ontario Waterski Championships will be hosted on July 19-20. Both events are expected to draw some serious competitors as well as interest from many local fans.
The facility itself will be open to the public seven days a week, from mid-May to mid-October. In the heart of the summer, it will open at 10 a.m. and close at sunset. “We end up closing after dark most nights because our customers just don’t want to leave,”?he said.
There’s no entrance admission and plenty of watersports offered for a fee. Waterskiing and wakeboarding are the most popular events. Other ancillaries include volleyball, swimming, canoeing.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own small water toys to use in the roped-off designated swimming areas. You’re also welcome to bring your own ski/wakeboard equipment, but equipment is available to rent. And of course, you might want to bring your own Neoprene Wetsuit Pants to keep you warm, if you’re planning on getting in the water and indulging in the watersports. Cycling and hiking path exists on the property.
Noyek loves the secluded spot. “When I am there I feel like I am deep in the country. You can’t hear the noise or smell the pollution. It’s really just a slice of paradise for someone like me who likes the outdoors. It doesn’t really feel like work when I’m there!”
Noyek wants Spray Lake to become a destination.
“We enjoy sharing our spot with people and being a unique memory in their summers. It’s rewarding to see people’s reactions, their positive social media posts and their recommendations to their friends. It’s an addicting place. A large percentage of people who come turn into regulars.”
Spray Lake is located at 18205 Keele Street, north of Highway 9.
