By Jake Courtepatte A pair of high-shooting, low-scoring losses at the hands of the Huntsville Otters last week has the Schomberg Cougars looking for answers two weeks into the Junior C season. Coming off their first win of the season last Sunday, spoiling the Caledon Golden Hawks' home opener with a 3-1 victory, the Cougars hosted the Huntsville Otters at Trisan Centre Thursday night. Despite throwing 42 shots on the Huntsville goal, a power play that went one for 11 was eventually Schomberg's downfall in a 2-1 loss. Schomberg netminder Nicholas Nabuurs was locked in a goalie battle with his Huntsville counterpart through the first 20 minutes, playing to a scoreless tie at intermission. Huntsville opened the scoring just two minutes into the second period, doubling their lead two minutes later. The Cougars were able to break the goose egg in the third period, with Brandon Cohen notching his first point in a Schomberg uniform, but it that would be as close as they would get. Nabuurs made 38 saves on 40 shots in the loss. Otters win at home The two teams wrapped up the mini-series Friday night, taking to Huntsville's home ice. Cougar vet Carter Leroux put his team up first with his first of the season, with Huntsville tying the score at ones before the end of the period. Huntsville outscored Schomberg 2-1 in the second period, with Mike Elia providing the only dagger for the road team, while the third was a scoreless tie. Huntsville won game two by a score of 3-2. Vince Michelizzi was given the job between the pipes for the Cougars, stopping 21 of the 24 shots he faced. The pair of losses puts Schomberg in a hole early in the Provincial Junior Hockey League season, picking up just two points over five games so far. The club's 1-4-0 record is good for a tie with the Golden Hawks and Orillia Terriers, in the basement of the Carruthers division. As is the case year after year, the Alliston Hornets lead the division by opening the season on a four-game winning streak. The weekly home game is the only one on the docket for this week for the Cougars, hosting the Stayner Siskins (2-1-0) at Trisan Centre on Thursday. Schomberg's sharpshooters will be asked to step up to find the win column, as the division's lowest-scoring offense meets the team with the lowest goals-against.
