Juvenile Red Wings swept out of OMHA championshipBy Jake Courtepatte A repeat of a provincial championship just wasn't in the cards for the juvenile Schomberg Red Wings. The Wings, who defeated the Beverly Jets in the OMHA final in 2015, went winless through four games of the 2016 match up with the Cayuga Stars which culminated on Saturday. Cayuga took the series in a 2-0 shutout of the Wings on home ice, after last Thursday's ice storm knocked out the power at the Trisan Centre, forcing a revamped schedule. “It's such a prestigious and hard championship to win, to see all the players and staff with smiles that will be on their faces for a long time, we couldn't be happier,” said Cayuga juvenile rep coach Kris Tessarolo. “I know it has been a long time coming for a few of our guys.” The Wings entered the series as arguably the favourites, sweeping through the semi-finals in three games with the South Bruce Blades. The Stars, meanwhile, took three straight wins over the Lambton Shore Predators after an opening loss and a tie in their semifinal. Cayuga took the first game by a score of 6-5 earlier this month, then played to a 5-5 tie in Schomberg in Game 2. Game 3 in Cayuga was a lopsided score of 6-1, with the series clinching shutout happening in Game 4. The Schomberg rep teams finish the year with one banner to raise to the rafters, a York-Simcoe title won by the Novice AE squad over the weekend. |
