Traikos shuts out Otters for Cougars’ second blank of the seasonJustin Formenton scored the game-winning goal in the Schomberg Cougars' 2-0 shutout of the Huntsville Otters Thursday at Trisan Centre. By Jake Courtepatte It was an up-and-down weekend for goaltender Alex Traikos in his return to a Schomberg Cougars sweater. After playing to a 1-1 tie against the Erin Shamrocks earlier this month, Traikos was named the first star in a Schomberg sweep of selections against the Huntsville Otters last Thursday. The netminder stopped all 33 shots he faced from the Otters, including a barrage of 17 shots in the middle frame, en route to a 2 – 0 shutout: his first of the year, and the team's first since October. Justin Formenton opened the scoring on the power play a few minutes into the second period, while Carter LeRoux earned second star honours by burying the Otters with a goal of his own shortly into the third. JP Crescenzi was named the third star of the contest, assisting on both Schomberg goals. His sixteen assists on the year trail only Ryley Egerton for the team lead, with both players on almost a point-per-game pace to lead the Cougars. The loss was only Huntsville's second in the last seven games. Stayner stings Cougars That solid performance by Traikos led to him being handed the reigns on Sunday as well visiting the Stayner Siskins, well within reach by the Cougars in league standings. This one, however, told a different story. It took only five minutes for Traikos's shutout streak to come to an end, though Crescenzi and Liam Spurgeon doubled up the Siskins before the midway point of the first. After Stayner tied it up late in the opening period, Kiefer McIntosh put the Cougars back in front with his team-leading seventeenth of the year early in the second. From there the floodgates opened for Stayner, scoring six straight goals in an eventual 8-3 drubbing. Traikos stopped 33 of 41 shots faced. A Caledon Golden Hawks win over the Erin Shamrocks on Sunday has shuffled up the lower half of the GMOHL standings, vaulting the Cougars to sixth-place and two points up on the Shamrocks. Schomberg's 13-17-3 record, however, is a tale of two teams. Though an abysmal 3-12-2 on the road, fans at Trisan Centre have to be pleased with a 10-5-1 record on home ice, good for third best in the Junior C league. These numbers could prove crucial as the season winds down. Five of the Cougars' seven remaining games on the regular season schedule are at home. They return to the ice Thursday to host the basement-dwelling Orillia Terriers (9-23-2), and cap off the week Friday visiting the Penetang Kings (12-21-2). Both Orillia and Penetang occupy the eighth and ninth-place spots in the nine-team league. Two weeks remain in the regular season.
