Cougars tie one, lose one against Erin ShamrocksLiam Spurgeon attempts to settle down the puck in last Sunday's 1-1 tie with the Erin Shamrocks at Erin Community Centre. By Jake Courtepatte The Schomberg Cougars picked up one point of a possible four over a shortened holiday schedule in the GMOHL. Meeting just days after Christmas, neither the Cougars nor the Erin Shamrocks were in a giving mood when they met at the Erin Community Centre. Six different penalties went on the board in a rough first period, leading to one Shamrock power play goal that snuck past Martin Lauzon mid-way through the frame. More rough stuff came in the second, with Schomberg forward Mitchell Robinson picking up his second misconduct in as many games, a check from behind that sent him to the dressing room. Meanwhile, a back-and-forth period had Kiefer McIntosh and Blake Culley notch tallies for the Cougars as Erin led 4-2 at intermission. Both Justin Formenton and Ryley Egerton, the team's highest-scoring defenceman and highest-scoring forward, spent half of the third period off the ice for inciting infractions. With their firepower limited, the Cougars found themselves down 5-2 and running out of time, with Brendan Spencer scoring to provide what remained of the team's offence. An empty-netter left the Cougars on the wrong end of a 6-3 score. Cougars even things up Back in Erin on Sunday, the Cougars skated to a 1-1 tie despite dominating the offensive play. Alex Traikos, in his premiere between the pipes for the Cougars, shone throughout the first period in stopping all 11 Erin shots. He was matched at the other end by Shamrocks goaltender Mark Terry, who stopped 14 directed by Schomberg for a 0-0 tie after one. Schomberg's only goal came during an 18-shot onslaught in the second period, with defenceman Linden Sturrock burying his third of the season. Traikos's shutout bid was ended with just over 30 seconds to go in the game, when he was beat by Jesse Gunn with an extra attacker on the ice. He was even called upon to stop a penalty shot in the overtime period, which he denied to preserve the tie. Traikos stopped 32 of 33 shots he faced, while Terry was forced to contend with 40 shots from the Cougars. Though giving up three of four points to a close rival can be costly, the Cougars remain in good standing in league statistics. Their 12-16-3 record ties them with the Shamrocks for sixth in the nine-team league, the upper hand given to Schomberg due to less games played. With just over three weeks remaining on the regular season schedule, a true test of character awaits the Cougars on the upcoming schedule. Regular Thursday home games resume this week, with Schomberg hosting the Huntsville Otters at the Trisan Centre, a team looking to lock up second-place behind only the elite Alliston Hornets. They close the week in Stayner on Sunday, facing a Siskins squad just one point up in the standings with a game in hand. Puck drop Thursday is at 8:30 p.m. For stats, schedules, and more information, visit www.schombergcougars.com. |
