By Jake Courtepatte It took the Schomberg Red Wings three overtimes to win last year's Juvenile International Silver Stick tournament. All the skills, stats, and standings are there again for a repeat this weekend, as the Juvies head to Mooretown for one of the grandest tournaments in North American minor hockey. After meeting the Loyalist Jets in the C division final for the last two years, with the Jets first coming out on top, the two rivals are met by the Douro Dukes and Newcastle Stars from league play in a 10-team tournament. Tournament director Rick Harris said the tournament is “something to look forward to every year,” and always provides a “great competitive environment.” Red Wings head coach Bruce Leonard said his team is also preparing for the Eastern Ontario Minor Hockey League playdowns, set to kick off Feb. 7 for divisional bragging rights. Another successful regular season wrapped up at the end of December, closing the season with a 4-0 shutout of the TNT Tornadoes. The Red Wings finished 15-4-1, while stringing together two separate five-game winning streaks. Finishing the regular season as the league's runner-up, the Red Wings will have home ice advantage for their best-of-three series against the Newcastle Stars, a team they outscored 10-2 over two wins in the regular season. The Red Wings were OMHA champs last season after defeating the Beverley Bandits in five games.
