Peewee A Knights cruise to eighth-straight victory at homeCameron Robinson (#92) looks out front for Vincenzo Marra in a 5-1 win over the Orillia Terriers at Nobleton Arena on Saturday. By Jake Courtepatte & Lucia Macedo A combination of a relentless offence and strong play between the pipes has the peewee A NobleKing Knights at the top of the York-Simcoe league heading into the Christmas break. With no losses on the table over a two-week period, the Knights were the favourites against the Orillia Terriers in their home rink of Nobleton Arena on Saturday. The Terriers put up a fight in the first period, forcing Steven Selvaggi to make a tough save on a rebound just 10 seconds into the contest. A few minutes later, Orillia opened the scoring on a two-on-one opportunity that just clipped of Selvaggi's shoulder and in. Forced to play out of their own end for most of the opening frame, the offence finally started to pick up when Christopher Petrungaro rang it off the post in the final minutes. Shortly after, Ryan Dimitroff tied the game on a nice cut to the middle and lifting it over the goaltender. They took the lead for good early in the second, with Cameron Robinson hiding on the back door and taking a cross-crease feed before burying it. Both Dimitroff and Robinson added one more each before the end of the second period, putting the game out of reach 4-1. Owen Clark scored on a nice backhander in the third to make it 5-1. At the other end, Selvaggi held his own while killing off a 5-on-3 in the final five minutes. The Knights areĀ now 15-5-6 in league play, five points up on the second-place Innisfil Winterhawks. Earlier in the month, the Knights captured their second consecutive championship tournament banner by winning the Bob Merkley Silver Stick Regional Tournament held in Midland Dec. 4-6. The Knights went undefeated in round robin play as they shut out all three of their opponents, the South Muskoka Bears (3-0), the Napanee Stars (7-0), and the New Hamburg Huskies (3-0), giving them a 1st place berth in the semi-finals against the determined Port Perry Predators. Despite giving up their first goal of the tournament, NobleKing advanced to the finals with a solid 3-1 win. In an all-York Simcoe final, the Knights faced their toughest challenge of the tournament as they met their regular season opponents, the Barrie Colts. Despite relentless pressure from the Colts, the Knights remained strong to hold on for a 2-1 win and capture the title of Midland Silver Stick champions. With the win the team is looking forward to travelling to Port Huron, Michigan the weekend of Jan. 21-24 compete for the International Silver Stick title. Selvaggi was named tournament MVP. |
