Cougars’ offence struggles in back-to-back losses Schomberg's Ryley Egerton attempts to clear the front of the Schomberg net against Caledon. The Golden Hawks shut out the Cougars 5-0 at the Trisan Centre on Thursday. By Jake Courtepatte A shutout at home and another road loss have dropped the Schomberg Cougars closer to the bottom of Georgian Mid-Ontario Hockey League standings. Meeting the surging Caledon Golden Hawks at Trisan Centre on Thursday night, the Hawks' roll could not be stopped. The previously basement-dwelling team beat Schomberg goaltender Vince Michelizzi twice in the first period, who could hardly be blamed while being peppered with shots. He did not, however, come out to start the third period between the pipes after giving up three more goals in the second, putting the Cougars in a 5-0 hole with the game all but over. Martin Lauzon was solid in relief, despite still searching for his first win this season. He stopped all seven shots he faced in the final frame, while his players provided no assistance for him at the other end, unsuccessful in all eighteen shots they put on Caledon's Sam Procopio throughout the game. Terriers take a bite A golden opportunity for a rebound performance came on Sunday, facing the Terriers in Orillia, an organization that had struggled to only three wins despite the fact the Junior C season is more than half over. Schomberg was by far the dominant squad in the first period, spending a good portion in the Orillia end, but were unable to solve Gordie Weiss for their fourth shutout period in a row. Joseph Mete finally put the Cougars on the board midway through the second, snapping a seven-game goalless drought to take the lead. Orillia came storming back just minutes later for three unanswered goals, scored within just four minutes of game time. A five-minute power play to end the second was just one of five-man advantages on the night that found the Cougars unsuccessful. The third period was marred by a couple cases of fisticuffs, with JP Crescenzi and Carter LeRoux both getting the boot for Schomberg as well as their sparring opponents from Orillia. The Terriers added an empty-netter with less than a minute left for a final score of 4-1. With Schomberg's only road win on the season coming earlier this month in Orillia, the Cougars will face a tough task on Sunday when they visit the Erin Shamrocks, holding an equal 8-13-2 record. The organizations are tied for second-last in the GMOHL standings, ahead of only the Terriers. Schomberg will first have to get by the Penetang Kings (10-12-1) at Trisan Centre on Thursday. Puck drop is at 8:30 p.m. The Cougars are hosting a holiday toy drive for SickKids Hospital, kicking off this Thursday and ending one week later at their home game against Alliston.
