Councillors urge residents to recycle junk mail

By Mark Pavilons
Residents need to take the bull by the horns and clean up the mess around neighbourhood mailboxes.
That was the message from King councillors recently, who discussed just how to clean up junk mail piling up around supermailboxes.
Andrzej Drzewiecki, Director of Engineering, Public Works and Building, pointed out that Markham has a unique program in place. They put blue boxes under the mailboxes that contain a slot for junk mail. Residents simply deposit their waste in the boxes, which are then picked up by city staff.
Councillors stressed that King simply doesn't have the money necessary for staff to visit every mailbox and empty the recycling bins. Canada Post won't address the issue either, so the onus is on residents themselves to address the problem.
Councillor Bill Cober said people often look to government to solve all of their problems.
“This is a litterbug problem,” he pointed out, adding residents need to simply take their junk mail home and deposit in their own recycling bins.
