Flyers topple Cougars as Schomberg falls to seventh in GMOHL

By Jake Courtepatte
Seven straight goals were the factor in the Midland Flyers' 8-4 win over the Schomberg Cougars in Georgian Mid-Ontario Hockey League action on Saturday.
In what was the Cougars' only game of the week, they faced a Midland team in the midst of a slump, struggling with three straight losses despite remaining second overall in the Junior C league.
Carter LeRoux put the Cougars on the board first, mid-way through their first power play of the game. Martin Lauzon was the starter in net for Schomberg, a three-year veteran of the league having spent his entire career with the Penetang Kings before a trade in mid-September.
He stopped all 14 pucks he faced in the first period, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead at intermission, before things got ugly.
LeRoux's second of the game following Evan Woodhead's fifth goal of the year put Schomberg in the lead 3-0 only a few minutes into the second. Midland answered with a power play marker 30 seconds later, and the floodgates opened.
For the next period and a half, the Flyers beat Lauzon seven times, three coming on the power play and even one shorthanded.
Connor Whiteside finally broke the streak with a Schomberg goal late in the third, before Midland added another for a final score of 8-4.
Lauzon is still looking for his first win of the year, holding on to a 0-6-1 record.
To add insult to injury, leading the way for the Flyers was forward Francesco Corona, who spent last season splitting time between the Cougars and the GMHL's Rama Aces.
What was equally as impressive as his six-point night was his line's total points – combined with Evan Buehler and Matt Schieck, the three combined for five goals and eleven assists.
Corona was added to the Flyers' roster last week after starting the season with the league-leading Alliston Hornets.
There was quite a shift in league standings over the weekend, all negative for the Cougars with no points gained in the ninth week of the regular season.
A record of 7-10-1 has dropped Schomberg into a tie for second-last in the nine team conference, ranked higher than the Erin Shamrocks due only to six more goals on the board throughout the year.
Moving past the Cougars were the Kings, who earned two points last week with a 1-2 record, as well as the Caledon Golden Hawks, whose recent success has taken them out of the basement after back-to-back wins over the weekend.
Schomberg will look to get back on track this Thursday, hosting the lowly Orillia Terriers at 8:30 p.m. at the Trisan Centre. The Terriers have won only two of their 21 games this season, neither of which has come on the road.
The Cougars then hit the road to face the Penetang Kings (8-12-0) and Stayner Siskins (10-5-3) Friday and Sunday respectively.
Both should prove to be a challenge – they themselves are only 1-7-0 in away games.
