Scotiabank teams up with historical society for opening

Modernity met history for the grand opening of the new Scotiabank at King's Ridge Marketplace in King City.
Kelly Matthews, the author of the new book “Eaton Hall: Pride of King Township,” was on hand to provide 100 copies of her work, detailing the history of the palatial mansion once owned by the Eaton family.
She also did her research on the land that the new Scotiabank stands on at 1700 King Road, finding a little historical background of its own.
“We are currently standing on the east half of Lot 6 in the 3rd Concession of King Township,” said Matthews. “When I went through the records for this property, I found some exciting information about the early inhabitants of this land.”
She found that in 1797, there were six original patentees in King Township, six people given the parcels of land found on the 86,000 acres of King. Edward Wright was given 200 acres, including the area that the new plaza stands on.
Four transactions later in 1822, the land was owned by a companion of Jesse Lloyd, now the namesake of Lloydtown. He joined Lloyd in leading the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837.
“This land that we now stand on today, where Scotiabank now calls its home, housed one of the first pioneers of the township, and a rebellion leader that helped lead the development of the country. And now we welcome Scotiabank, who has already demonstrated their interest and support of local history.”
With that, Scotiabank presented a $1,000 donation to the King Township Historical Society.
“You'd be pretty hard-pressed to turn over a stone in King City and not find some sort of historical tidbit, or fact,” said Matthews.
Matthews was pleased to announce that after three months on the market, book sales have already tipped just over a thousand.
“It's pretty remarkable for a small, niche, book, so I want to thank the community.”
