The Township of King and the Holland Marsh Growers Association and The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury are once again presenting the Holland Marsh Soupfest Saturday, Oct. 3 at Ansnorveldt Park. The event runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day at the park, located on Dufferin Street, north of Highway 9. There is nothing better on a crisp fall day than a nice bowl of soup! Soupfest showcases the best produce the Holland Marsh has to offer. This event gives patrons a unique opportunity to sample delicious soups created with produce and meats grown locally in the Holland Marsh. For those who operate farms in the Holland Marsh, a provincially designated Specialty Crop Area within a provincially significant wetland, the Soupfest is an opportunity to showcase the 40-plus edible horticulture crops that are grown in this “salad bowl.” According to Councillor Avia Eek, a Holland Marsh farmer and proud booster of Soupfest, the intent of this “steamy and savoury celebration of locally grown, and world renown produce is to make folks aware of the products that are available in the GTA.” They are also fortunate to have other sectors of agriculture involved as well. She explained that several years ago, this initiative was started by the Holland Marsh Growers Association as a small event to promote the Holland Marsh through a “soupalicious” connection. “As this event grew in popularity, the Township of King, decided to take on this Ward 6 event in continued partnership with the Holland Marsh Growers Association and the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury.” It's not just about the soup. Also on tap will be musical entertainment by Elyse Saunders (country music), Bob and Doug (bluegrass, mostly instrumental), and Justin Parsons (folk music). Are you a soupmaker?  If you are, organizers would love to have you join them. For more information on how you can get involved, please contact tveer@king.ca, or go to soupfest.ca and download the soupmakers package.  Restaurants and caterers are all welcome! Tickets can be purchased in advance at a reduced rate until Oct. 2. They're also available at the door the day of the event.
