Long-time Schomberg business owner hangs up her apronBy Jake Courtepatte Sheena Henderson plays a prominent role in the history of Main Street in Schomberg. Over 30 years ago, she opened up shop as a tea room on the ground floor of the old feed mill in town. Today, Sheena's Kitchen is famous for her homemade soups, sandwiches, and desserts, including her sought-after lemon cream sponge cake. Her apron is now hung up for good, with new ownership taking over. Despite a humble location on the historic Main Street in Schomberg, her home-style cooking has garnered a following reaching far beyond town lines. “She's been a mainstay here in Schomberg for such a long time,” said King Mayor Steve Pellegrini. “My parents lived in Mississauga, and long before any of our family lived in King, they would stop here to get her chicken pot pies.” Pellegrini was one of dozens of customers and staff who stopped by the tea room last week to pay tribute to the 83-year-old, who retired from the business in June. Although she said she enjoyed every minute she spent at the tea room and with her loyal customers, Henderson would like to thank her friendly staff for their commitment over the years. “Sheena's Kitchen was never just for me, it was for everybody. All the staff … that's who the customers meet more than anybody. “I've had people ask if there really is a Sheena,” she joked. But the real Sheena, now a few months retired, said it was difficult but not a tough decision to make. “I've been here a long time, and I have a lot of memories to hold.” |
