With a ceremonial pitch from King Councillor David Boyd, the inaugural season of Queens of King softball has opened.
Four teams took to the diamonds at Nobleton Arena on Sunday night to battle it out in the new QKSL, a league set up by local resident Alex Simonato “for women of all skill levels and experience.”
With games played every Sunday, the league is looking to fill a gap in King and the surrounding area in women's team sports. Their goal is to provide a fun and safe environment where women can “enjoy a few hours away from home, to catch her breath, enjoy a little challenge and have a whole lot of fun.”
After a rain delay caused the opening ceremonies a setback of one week, around 60 players were on hand to hear watch Boyd throw out the opening pitch, who cited that the Queens of King is “a great new addition to our community.”
While there has been softball for women in the area in the past, it's been years since an organized league of this caliber has been offered in King.
“It's been about a year in the making,” said Simonato. “We're grateful, we're excited, and we can't wait to see how it goes.”
In the first night of action, the Missy Mayhems battled the Sexy Sluggers, while the Killer Queens took on Chicks Dig It.
Simonato said the games went off without a hitch.
“I'm a high-strung person, but I was so calm in the first game in this league, which was surprising. I think it's the mentality, what the board is trying to make it, a fun and exciting learning environment.”
Simonato would like to thank the league's sponsors: My Blue Umbrella, RZ Enterprises, Wynn Construction, Raffaele's Cantina, Real Time Contracting, Maple Oak Construction, RBC, and Nobleton Physiotherapy, without whom the league would not be possible.
