The Juvenile Red Wings were the final representative of Schomberg hockey on Saturday as the last team standing, and ended the 2014-15 season in dramatic fashion.
They became the 2014-15 OMHA champions in a case of redemption, having fallen to the Beverley Bandits in the finals last season. In a first-to-six-points rematch, the Wings were this year's victors by a score of 7-3.
A strong start to the series left the Red Wings unbeaten in the first three games, up 5-1 in points and needing only a tie in the final three games to clinch the championship.
As with any good powerhouse match-up, earning that one extra point was a grind. They gave up a lead in the third period of Game 4 to hand the Bandits their first win, and breathe new life into an series that seemed long over.
But six days later, it was the Wings that squeaked out a one-goal victory, riding the hot goaltending of Ryan McLaughlin to a 2-1 final. McLaughlin was stellar all series, never allowing more than three goals past him. Schomberg held the second lowest goal-against in the York-Simcoe division during the regular season.
It was a big year for the Juvenile Wings, who also took home a Silverstick Championship back in January.
Two other Schomberg teams came out of the season as York-Simcoe champions. The Midget AE's scored 17 goals over two games to defeat the Pickering Panthers, while the Novice Rep team pulled off a three-game comeback over the Aurora Tigers to top their division.
