Novice LL team wins York-Simcoe title

The Shomberg Novice LL team won the league title on Saturday with a 6-4 win over The team celebrating the victory with the trophy.

The Novice LL Red Wings are the Simcoe region champions!
It's been an incredible season for this young team.  At the start of the season, the Schomberg team was in last place. The team of 7- and 8-year-olds was large (18 skaters with four rotating as goalies), but had only a few seasoned players.
Back in September, there were no “defence” or “forwards” and a couple of the rookie players were just learning to skate.  They had much to learn both as individuals and as a team in order to become competitive.
They improved remarkably quickly; climbing to the middle of the pack by the half way point in the season and finishing in third place after 26 games of season play.
Winning 3 of 4 games against Innisfil in the first round of playoffs, the novice team advanced to the championship side where they faced the 2nd place Beeton team.
The feisty Schomberg team won their first two games, but then lost two in a row to the strong Beeton team. In the fifth and elimination game, however, the Red Wings won a decisive 8:2 victory to advance to the championship series against Lefroy.
Like Schomberg, Lefroy had started out near the bottom of the pack, but had fought their way up through the standings and had just knocked out the first place Thornton team in the playoffs. The Lefroy team proved to be a strong opponent.
Schomberg had two narrow victories in the first two games (5-3 and 4-3) before the March Break. But as with the Beeton series, they then lost two in a row.
This past Saturday, at home at the Trisan Centre, there was a full house to cheer on the local team in their fifth and possible elimination game.
Schomberg came out strong and determined and it looked as though they had the game well in hand as they entered the third period with a 5-goal lead. But the Lefroy team had not gotten to where they were without skill and determination. They battled back in that third period, closing the gap to 5-4.   With less than a minute of play left in the game, the Lefroy goalie skated to the bench and a Red Wing penalty gave them a two-man advantage.
The Lefroy team gave it their all and battled as the clock ran out, but the novice Red Wings LL held on and managed an empty net goal in the last few seconds of the game. Victory was theirs.
This incredible team has made their parents, their coaches and their town very proud. They worked hard, played with heart, courage and true sportsmanship. Not only did they become competitive, they became the number one team in Simcoe Region.
A huge “thank you” goes out to the dedicated coaching staff (Chris, Cam, Jody, Rob) and equally dedicated parent group for an amazing year with a truly wonderful group of people.
