KMC presents four-handed traditional jazzFamed four-handed jazz pianists Paolo Alderighi and Stephanie Trick will perform in King April 11. Photo by Cosimo Filippini By Mark Pavilons Jazz-lovers are in for a spring treat as the King Music Collective kicks it up a notch with their next offering in their music series. A solo and “four-handed” traditional jazz piano performance from the lovely and talented American “stride” jazz pianist Stephanie Trick and her equally talented husband, traditional jazz pianist Paolo Alderighi, will take place Saturday, April 11 from 2 to 5 p.m. During the event, light snacks and beverages will be served. As a special educational feature, noted broadcaster and jazz journalist Ted O'Reilly will be conducting a brief interview with Stephannie and Paolo during the break between sets. The artists will be performing on King Music Collective founder Michele Mele's gorgeous Fazioli piano, arguably the finest piano in the world. Paolo and Stephanie are a “four-hands” jazz piano duo dedicated to playing the songs of the Swing Era, along with some ragtime and blues. Although their styles differ – Paolo focuses on the music of Erroll Garner, Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson and Stephanie focuses on Fats Waller, James P. Johnson and Albert Ammons – they've found common ground and exciting arrangements that suit their sound as a duo. Since 2010, they have been performing together in the U.S., Europe and Japan. In June 2014, they released their second album together, Sentimental Journey. Their first CD was released in July of 2012 and is entitled Two for One. Trick has come to practically dominate the stride piano field. Harlem stride piano, which developed in the 1920s and ‘30s, is an orchestral style of two-handed piano playing that not only swings, but is also technically demanding and exciting to watch. Alderighi received his degree in Piano from the G. Verdi Conservatory of Milan in 2000 and a degree in Economics for Arts, Culture, and Media from Bocconi University in 2005. He reached the second position in the “Top Jazz” referendum organized by the jazz magazine Musica Jazz as “Best New Talent” and first in the popular referendum Italian Jazz Awards as “Brand New Jazz Act.” The King Music Collective is a brand-new local music society, which will feature monthly musical performances from internationally renowned jazz/music artists as well as from many of our finest Canadian jazz musicians, all presented in an intimate setting, with all pianists tickling the ivories. Throughout the 2015 season, monthly events will take place through October 2015. Upcoming artists will include Latin piano giant Hilario Duran, trumpet legend Guido Basso and international jazz pianist and multiple Grammy/Juno winner, Renee Rosnes. Ticket price will include a beverage and a tasty snack. In addition, there will also be brief Question and Answer periods with the performing artists that will be hosted by noted jazz journalists and broadcasters, as well as the presentation of unique circus performances during intermissions!
