Cougars ring in the new year with offensive production

Goaltender Taylor Ewart went a strong 2-0-1 for the Cougars last week.

By Jake Courtepatte
The Junior C Schomberg Cougars looked to even up the season series against the Orillia Terriers Tuesday night, behind 2-1 so far in the season.
They entered the game riding a two-game winning streak, good for eighth in the tight-knit GMOHL standings.
No rust showed on the Cougars' sticks in the first period, as they opened up for four goals from John Gage, JP Crescenzi, Kiefer McIntosh and Brandon Yorke.
At the other end, Taylor Ewart allowed two for a 4-2 Schomberg lead.
The Cougars kept pouring it on in the second, with Crescenzi completing the hat trick in a three-goal effort in the period.
Gage completed a hat trick of his own in the third, with a final score of 9-5 in a Cougar victory.
The Cougars poured 51 shots on net in the game.

Midland sunk

They were in Midland to face the Flyers on Friday, highlighted by a rare natural hat trick by Blake Culley in the first period.
Culley scored twice on the power play, then once more nearing the buzzer to put the Cougars up 3-0.
They ran away with the game in the second on goals from Yorke and Crescenzi, a lead they would ride to a 7 – 3 victory.

Shootout with Stayner

Schomberg`s toughest challenge of the week came at home on Monday, when the second-place Stayner Siskins visited for the third time this season.
The Siskins had their number all season, racking up a 4-0 record overall versus the Cougars.
Ewart and his counterpart Trevor Bloch had the game locked in a goaltending battle, each conceding a goal late in the first before shutting out the offence completely.
He made 20 saves in the remainder of regulation to guarantee the point and head to a shootout.
Yorke and Cam Russell just could not get it done in the shootout, as Ewart conceded the first two shots for a decisive 2-1 Siskin victory.
With the winning week the Cougars jump into seventh in the standings, now 14-16-1-2 on the season.
The core of the GMOHL standings remains unpredictable, as only nine points separate fifth place and tenth place.
Looking ahead the Cougars face a tough week, hosting the Huntsville Otters on Thursday before hitting the road to face the Penetang Kings on Friday.
