Good Samaritans help clear snow at residenceI am writing to thank the men and women who so kindly gave up their free time on Saturday, Dec. 13 to clean up the snow between the cars at the Nobleton Pines seniors' apartments. I don't know if the general public is aware that York Regional Housing Authority has told these seniors that York Region will clean sidewalks and main driveways but they (the residents) are responsible to clean up any snow drifts both beside/between and behind their cars. The average age of the tenants in the building is over 80 years old and many with health issues. It makes me wonder who is to blame when one of these people have a heart attack trying to do this. The seniors building in Schomberg has the snow cleared from not only between their cars but often their cars cleaned off as well. Why does one building get this service and not the other? Friday, Dec. 12, when I arrived to care for one of the handicapped seniors I take to do errands, I found that the handicapped parking space was not plowed out at all. It was a day of continuous telephone calls from not only myself but other caregivers, family members of a few of the residents and the residents themselves to York Regional Housing and the mayor to express displeasure at the snow situation there. I spoke to the building manager and phoned the property manager to tell them both that if I could not gain access to the handicapped parking when I returned with my handicapped charge that I would not hesitate to call Nobleton firefighters to carry this woman into the building. The property manager did return my call saying it was the 1st snowfall and this would be done by 3 p.m. This was not the first snowfall and the handicapped space was not attended to the last time and I believe that there are bylaws about this. I was also informed by the property manager that the parking lot was slated to be completely cleaned up on Monday, Dec. 15 when the residents moved out their cars. Nice idea but who again is left to dig these cars out? It is the seniors themselves. This policy must change! I must thank councillor David Boyd for taking not only the time to hear my complaints but also for going over to the seniors' building to check on this issue himself, calling the York Regional Housing emergency line to express his displeasure and also getting a group of volunteers together to get the lot cleaned up before Monday's complete clean up. I wanted the residents of King Township to be aware of this problem as it could be one of your loved ones in that building some time in the future. M. Claire Mills Schomberg |
