ASK car rally draws large crowd

The winners of the ASK car rally were Team Ardill.
Almost a hundred people “ASKed For a Ride” and joined in the fun of the Adventure Car Rally through King Oct. 19.
The weather co-operated with a mix of sun and clouds, and the leaves hung precariously on to the trees, creating spectacular vistas through hills and valleys, around kettle lakes and into quaint villages. Drivers and their teams found many new and unusual stops along the route. They used their navigational skills, their collective memories, their reading ability, their drawing techniques, and their aptitude for observing  closely, to perform many tasks en-route – visiting the world's largest inukshuk; sampling local honey produced by King bees; getting up close and personal with equestrian heroes; wandering in a very secret garden; admiring the work of several well-known artists; cozying up to a deadhouse; dressing up as firemen, and much more.
The route to their final destination led them through construction sites and around dead ends to the Bray Museum, a jaw-dropping collection of memorabilia from the last 100 years. The history of transportation from the late 1800s, with all its accompaniments, is displayed on the two floors of this beautifully restored and maintained building. Car rally guests were mesmerized, and it took the ringing of a very loud school bell to get them to line up for dinner.
Dinner was another delight – the main course a suckling pig roasted on-site, with salads, vegetables and sauces. Desserts were prepared locally – apple crisps from Pine Farm Orchards, and carrot cake prepared by Dorio's Kettleby Bakery with carrots grown in the Holland Marsh. The beer was local too, from King Brewery.
The awarding of raffle prizes, a live auction, and rally winners filled out the evening. Prizes included a chance for guests to improve their social life with dinner with Mayor Pellegrini and 6 friends, or wine tasting for 10. They could learn to wakeboard, go to the theatre, put up a birdhouse, read about the Holland Marsh or Carrying Place Trail, or get their car washed.
After a day of fun and adventure, supported in so many ways by contributors all over the township, everyone went home a winner.
