Cougars drop back-to-back games for first time since September

By Jake Courtepatte
The Junior C Schomberg Cougars have experienced a number of ups-and-downs this season while moving around the standings.
The Fergus Devils made their first trip of the season to Schomberg last Thursday, having fallen 6 – 3 to the Cougars earlier in the year.
The match had high standings implications, with the Cougars sitting one point up in the GMOHL.
The home rink was quickly quieted by a goal just over one minute in by Devil Joshua Schafer, his sixth of the season. Despite putting 12 shots on net in the first, the Cougars could not solve the Fergus goaltender and went into the dressing room down 1-0.
Schomberg's special teams did not help them in the second, picking up a couple of stick infractions that eventually led to Fergus doubling their lead on the power play.
The Devils put the game out of reach in the third period, adding another power play marker. The lone Schomberg goal of the game came with just over six minutes left to play, with Brandon Yorke picking up his 12th point of the season in just 11 games.
Schafer added one more before the end of the frame to lead the Devils to a 4-1 victory.
The Cougars made the trip to Penetang Friday to face the league-leading Kings for their first meeting of the year. Schomberg fell to Penetang in six games in last season's GMOHL playoffs semifinals.
This time Schomberg came out pressing, with Matthew Hudgin notching his third of the year just over two minutes in. However, King Craig Robinson continued his spectacular start to the year by earning two goals and an assist in the first frame, leaving the teams tied 3-3 heading into the first intermission.
That was the end of the offensive production for the Cougars, putting just six shots on net in the second period.
Meanwhile, the Kings unloaded for three unanswered goals in the period, putting the Cougars in a 6-3 hole after the second that they just could not crawl out of.
Starting goaltender Taylor Ewart was pulled after the sixth goal to be replaced by Alex Traikos.
Despite putting 10 shots on net in the third compared to Penetang's nine, the Cougars couldn't find twine as the Kings added an insurance marker for the 7-3 win.
The Cougars face some tough scheduling this week, hosting the Kings at the Trisan Centre Thursday night in what will be the teams last meeting until January. They then head to Alliston the next day to face the 8-2-1 Hornets, fresh off handing the Kings their first regulation loss of the season.
